Return/Refund Policy
The UC San Diego Bookstore strives for customer satisfaction. If any product you select from the Bookstore fails to meet your expectations, we will respond to your concern & assist you in an exchange, refund or credit whenever possible within the guidelines which apply to our specific merchandise categories.

  • All categories of refundable merchandise (see textbooks section for textbooks/course materials return deadlines) require an original receipt to obtain a refund, exchange, or credit within 14 days of purchase.
  • General Interest, Technical & Medical Books must be in resalable condition & be among the titles currently carried.
  • Clothing, gifts, school & office supplies must be in resalable condition with original packaging and/or tags.
  • For Supply Department electronics, original packaging is required. Calculators & voice recorders must be returned unopened & in resalable condition. Exceptions: Defective calculators or voice recorders may be exchanged for same or upgraded model within 14 days of purchase. Defective merchandise is subject to inspection by Bookstore staff.
  • Non-refundable/non-exchangeable merchandise: Medical instruments, medical & other testing books (MDTEST & REFEXM), magazines, clearance books & merchandise, bargain books, greeting cards, food & drink, health & beauty products, plants, rain gear, parking permits, phone cards and undergarments. Original cash register receipt required.

Textbooks:

Conditions applying to all refunds:

  • Original cash register receipt required.
  • Course materials purchased new must be returned in new condition. Materials with bent or dirty corners, damage to the spine, scratches or other signs of wear, or with any marking, will be deemed used & a used-price refund may be given.
  • Non-returnable/non-exchangeable items: books not used in the current or upcoming term, course materials with broken software seals, opened materials designated with an "X" before the title on the shelf tag or receipt or marked on the packaging, SOM & Pharmacy syllabi, & all mini-block materials.
  • Defective materials will be replaced up to the end of Finals.
  • If you bought the materials before the end of a previous term's Finals, please present a Term Audit from that term, showing you did not take a class using those materials.
  • Unless you dropped the class you must request your refund at least eight calendar days before the last class meeting.
  • Graduate, Undergraduate, School of Medicine & Pharmacy Course Materials (textbooks), Fall, Winter & Spring Quarters: You may get a refund through Saturday of 2nd Week each quarter. After Saturday of 2nd Week, refunds will not be given & all course materials sales are final. Exception: After Saturday of 2nd Week through Monday of 5th Week you may get a refund with a Term Audit showing you dropped the class.
  • Graduate, Undergraduate, School of Medicine & Pharmacy Course Materials (textbooks), Summer Session: For five- to ten-week Summer Session classes: You may get a refund through Saturday of the 1st Week. After Saturday of 1st Week, refunds will not be given & all course materials sales are final. Exception: After Saturday of 1st Week through Monday of 3rd Week, you may get a refund with a Term Audit showing you dropped the class.
  • For less-than-five-week Summer Session classes: You may get a refund up to two calendar days after the first day the class meets. After that period refunds will not be given & all course materials sales are final. Exception: Between the second calendar day after the first day the class meets up to the last day to drop the class without a "W" you may get a refund with a Term Audit showing you dropped the class. Consult the Summer Session Schedule of Classes for the last-day-to-drop dates.
  • University Extension & ELI Classes, All Quarters: For classes beginning 1st & 2nd Weeks: You may get a refund through Saturday of 2nd Week each quarter. After Saturday of 2nd Week, refunds will not be given & all course materials sales are final. Exception: After Saturday of 2nd Week through Monday of 5th Week, you may get a refund with proof showing you dropped the class.
  • For classes beginning after 2d Week: Refunds will not be given & all course materials sales are final. Exception: You may get a refund up to eight calendar days after the first class meeting with proof that you dropped the class using the materials.

Computer Store:

  • All products purchased from the UCSD Bookstore are warranted against defects, by the manufacturer.
  • Manufacturer's warranties apply from the date of purchase. For assistance, please contact the warranty provider. Terms of warranty may vary. All new products are sold with the manufacturer's limited warranty. The warranty period and service varies by manufacturer and product.
  • In our experience, many problems can be resolved with the assistance and technical expertise of the manufacturer.
  • Items purchased from UCSD Bookstore and returned within 10 days from the date of purchase with the original packaging, receipt or invoice are eligible for refund or exchange. All returns may be subject to a 15% restocking fee.
  • Please include all accessories with any returns. This includes software, manuals, cables, adapters, etc. Returned items that do not include all peripherals may be returned to the customer and/or charged on a per item basis. All returns are subject to additional inspection after the return is made. Customer is responsible for any missing items.
  • UCSD Bookstore does not accept returns on opened software. Defective software products may be exchanged for the same title only within 10 days of purchase. Non-defective software that has been opened is not returnable under any circumstances, unless the manufacturer offers a money-back guarantee (MBG). All software is subject to license agreements or terms established by the software publisher. Be sure to read and agree to the license before using the software.
  • In the case of any return, for any reason, the returned products must be in "new" condition, 100% complete, in original and resalable condition, with all packaging, manuals, registration card(s) and software. We reserve the right to refuse a return on any product that does not meet these requirements.
  • Shipping charges and insurance charges are not refundable.
  • DO NOT MARK THE BOX ITSELF IN ANY WAY. All published prices, specifications and services are subject to change without notice. Price protection is not guaranteed for these circumstances. Published prices do not include shipping and insurance.
  • Rebate and coupon offers provided by manufacturers are subject to the terms specified by the manufacturer. These terms include the timeframe of the offer, limitations on quantities and combination with other offers. Proof of purchase and UPC codes from the original packaging are normally required for redemption of rebates by the manufacturer or the manufacturer's agent.
  • Restocking fees will be charged for printers returned with installed toner or ink cartridges and SPECIAL ORDERED items not carried in our inventory. Any other defective hardware products may be returned in accordance to manufacturer's policy within ten (10) days of the invoice date for same model replacement and not for any refund.
  • Apple hardware products cannot be exchanged or returned. Defective products are repaired at the discretion of Apple Computer, Inc.
