Textbook Reservation System (TRS) FAQs
Schedule Changes/Late Orientation
I already reserved my books, but I just changed my schedule. What should I do?
[]
Don't worry. Our system will automatically access your most recent schedule of classes at the time we pack your books. We will begin that process in late August or early September. If your schedule changes between the time your box is packed and the time you pick it up, you can make changes when you pick up your books during Move-In Weekend. We will have cashiers in the Price Center Ballroom to take care of refunds, exchanges, and other transactions quickly.
I am wait-listed for a class. Can I reserve my books?
[]
Our current system does not have a way of accessing wait lists. However, if you email and let us know which class you are wait-listed for, we can manually update your reservation and include books for that class.
I will not attend orientation until September. Can I reserve my books now?
[]
We will not be able to pack books for you until you enroll and choose classes. We use your class schedule to prepare a packing list. If you are enrolling before September, no problem. If you enroll on Thursday, September 14, we will be able to have your books ready for Move-In Weekend. If you enroll Friday, September 15, please print out your class schedule and bring it to the Bookstore. We will be glad to assist you in selecting your books. We recommend that you purchase your books before classes start on September 18; beginning then it will be very crowded in the store and most of the used textbooks will be gone!
Used Books
How much money do I save with used books?
[]
Used books are priced at 25% less than new copies.
If I select that I prefer used books, can I be sure that I will get used books only?
[]
If you select that you prefer used books, we will pack used books if they are available. If they are not, we will pack new books. There is no "used only" option. The earlier you reserve your books, the better chance you will have of getting used copies, which are in high demand. Also be aware that professors may select books that are in brand new editions, in which case no used copies will be available.
Do you have a lot of used copies?
[]
We stock as many used books as we can find from the limited numbers available. Our sources for used books include copies bought back from UCSD students as well as books purchased from several national used book wholesalers.
What shape are used books in?
[]
The condition of used books varies widely, but ours are usually in pretty good shape. Most used books have some writing, underlining, or highlighting - that comes with the "used" character of the book. We will try to choose the best copy available when we are packing your books. The earlier you reserve, the more likely it is you will get high quality books. If any copy does not meet your standards, you will have until the refund deadline to exchange or get a full refund. Just be sure to keep your receipt, which will be in your TRS reservation box. You will need it in order to get a refund or exchange.
Recommended Books
I reserved only Required books, but now I have decided that I want to order Recommended books as well. Can I do that?
[]
Yes, up until we begin packing books in late August or early September, you can make this type of adjustment to your order. To request a change, please email. However, you do not need to notify us about any changes you make in your class schedule. Our system automatically picks up your most recent schedule of classes.
Are there any guidelines on whether to order Recommended books?
[]
The value to you of the recommended books will vary with your strength in a given subject and the quality of the recommended books (usually a study guide or student solutions manual). It also depends on how an individual student uses recommended materials. Some use them for help, while others may want the challenge of covering the additional study materials and problems in the Recommended books as a way to achieve mastery. If you have strong doubts you want this kind of extra material, you may want to choose Required books only, then attend classes and listen to what your professors say (if anything) about the Recommended or Optional books. If you decide that you do want to purchase the Recommended titles, we will have them in stock until the fifth week of Fall quarter. That's when we start returning Fall books to make room for Winter quarter books. However, if a Recommended book is going to be used in the Winter, we will just keep it on our shelves. Most of the recommended books for multi-term core sequence classes such as chemistry, foreign languages, biology, math, etc., are used every quarter and we do not return them.
If I choose Recommended books and then decide I don't want or need them, can I return them?
[]
Yes, we have a fairly long refund period. To get a refund, you need your original cash register receipt, which will be in your TRS reservation box. Books purchased new must be in new condition.
Bar Charts
What are Quick Study Bar Charts?
[]
Quick Study Bar Charts are concise reference guides which cover information pertaining to a specific subject. They are comprehensive, easy to use, and affordable, with most priced at $4.95 or $5.95.
What do Quick Study Bar Charts look like?
[]
Quick Study Bar Charts are sized and three-hole punched to fit standard notebooks. They are four-color, laminated, and four or six pages in length. Click here to see one page of the Chemistry guide, a best-selling Bar Chart that contains chemistry essentials for beginning chemistry students and can be used as a reference throughout higher level courses.
What subjects do Quick Study Bar Charts cover?
[]
There are over 250 Quick Study Bar Charts covering topics relevant to students, medical professionals, computer users, and others. Bar Charts are available for a variety of academic subjects in the areas of science, math, language, history, English, and business.
How do you know which Quick Study Bar Charts I will need?
[]
We carefully match Quick Study Bar Charts to the courses offered at UCSD. When we match your class schedule to the list of courses you are enrolled in, we know which textbooks and other course materials you will need as well as which Bar Charts, if any, are applicable.
What if I order Quick Study Bar Charts but decide that they are not suitable for my needs?
[]
You may return the Bar Charts for a refund immediately if you wish. We will have cashiers in the Price Center Ballroom when you pick up your TRS reservations during Move-In Weekend. They will handle refunds and other transactions on the spot. You also have until the refund deadline to get a refund or credit at the Bookstore. Just remember you must present your original cash register receipt, which will be packed in your TRS reservation box when you pick your books up.
If I do not reserve copies, will I be able to obtain Quick Study Bar Charts later?
[]
Yes, we carry Quick Study Bar Charts all year long. Not only do we have Bar Charts shelved near the related textbooks in the Course Materials Department, but we have a permanent display, containing an even wider selection, in the general book area of the Bookstore. In addition, we will have a display of Bar Charts in the Price Center Ballroom during Move-In Weekend when you pick up your TRS reservation.
Prices
Can you give me an estimate of what my Fall quarter textbooks are likely to cost?
[]
Textbooks are expensive. Expect to pay $300-$400 for Fall quarter books. The good news is that many textbooks used in the Fall quarter of the first year are for core sequence courses, such as chemistry, math, and foreign languages, and the same books are used in Winter and Spring quarters.
Can you send me a list of all my books and prices?
[]
Because we expect to handle nearly 4000 reservations this year, we simply cannot reply with individual lists of titles and prices. However, this information is available on line - just log on to TritonLink via WebReg and go to the schedule of classes. For each section you are enrolled in, click the red book icon in the right-hand column. A new window will show you, in real time, the information we have for that course, including prices and availability for each title. "R" is required; "O" is optional/recommended. This window will not show the Bar Charts, but they run $4.95 or $5.95.
Methods of Payment
Do you prefer a particular method of payment?
[]
Please feel free to use any of the three payment options: any major credit card, your UCSD Student Account, or TritonPlus.
Which credit cards do you accept?
[]
We honor all major credit cards. The credit card will be charged at the time your books are packed in late August or early September, so be sure to use a card with an expiration date after that time. If the credit card is not valid, your Student Account will be charged.
What is my Student Account?
[]
Every UCSD student has a Student Account through Student Business Services (SBS). Your TRS purchase can be added to this account, which is billed to you monthly by UCSD. All charges will occur after books are packed in late August or early September. Within a few days of our billing that account, you can view your Student Account on line through TritonLink. Your Student Account can also be used for other purchases at the UCSD Bookstore throughout the year. Just present your Student I.D to any cashier and ask that your purchase be billed to your Student Account. To find out more about Student Accounts, visit http://www-bfs.ucsd.edu/sbs.
How does TritonPlus work?
[]
TritonPlus is a pre-deposit, debit card, which requires a pre-existing balance before we can bill it. If you choose to pay for your TRS reservation by Triton Plus and there are not sufficient funds in that account, your Student Account will be charged for the balance.
What is the most popular method of payment?
[]
Nearly 70% of last year's 3500 reservations were charged to UCSD Student Accounts.
What if I want to change my method of payment?
[]
You can change your method of payment up until the time we pack your books in late August or early September. To request a change, email us. You can also change your method of payment at the time you pick up your books. We will have cashiers in the Price Center Ballroom for that purpose.
Can I use my financial aid money to pay for my books?
[]
There are many types of financial aid, and we are not experts. For further details and information on when your aid will be available, how it can be used, etc., we recommend that you contact the office or agency through which your aid is coming. However, you can specify that your TRS reservation be charged to your UCSD Student Account, which is billed monthly, giving you time to pay the account with your financial aid.
Can I pay for my TRS reservation with a check?
[]
You cannot pre-pay by check. However, once you pick up your books, you can get an immediate refund and then pay by check. We will have cashiers in the Price Center Ballroom for this purpose.
With cash?
[]
You cannot pre-pay with cash. However, once you pick up your books, you can get an immediate refund and then pay with cash. We will have cashiers in the Price Center Ballroom for this purpose.
Miscellaneous
Is there a fee for TRS?
[]
There is no fee for this service.
I think I may have placed two TRS orders by mistake. What should I do?
[]
Don't worry about creating a duplicate order. Our system will not allow us to enter two reservations for the same student ID number.
If I decide not to reserve my books, can I just come in and buy them?
[]
Sure. In fact, we have many Fall quarter books on our shelves now. The easiest way to find your books is to print out your class schedule and bring it to the Bookstore. You will find your books arranged by course and number, and we will be glad to assist you. We recommend that you purchase your books before classes start on September 23; beginning then the store will be very crowded and most of the used textbooks will be gone! The store will be open Saturday and Sunday, September 16 and 17, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on September 18, 19, and 20.
What is your refund policy for textbooks?
[]
With a cash register receipt, you can return or exchange textbooks anytime within the refund deadline. The books must be in saleable condition, so don't write in your new textbooks or otherwise mark or soil them until you're sure you'll keep them. You will receive your cash register receipt in your TRS reservation box when you pick up your books.
Does the Bookstore carry books for all UCSD classes?
[]
The UCSD Bookstore carries books for all classes that professors or academic departments give us information about, which is most UCSD classes. Sometimes professors send their book lists to Groundwork Books, a UCSD student co-op and we may not get that information at all. Others may order custom coursepacks through Associated Students Soft Reserves. If the UCSD Bookstore knows that course materials are available at Groundwork Books or Soft Reserves, that information displays on TritonLink.
